Solky

The company Solki Affumicati e Salati was founded in 2002 in a small workshop in Sant'Antioco by Fernando Antioco Fois, a native of Sant'Antioco who had previously spent 40 years working in industrial construction and assembly. Today, after more than twenty years, Solki with the brand Solky is a well-established reality, with a modern facility that guarantees the highest levels of hygiene and efficiency, and a team of skilled fish processing artisans who craft authentic seafood delicacies with rare expertise using excellent quality raw materials.

The sea, the boats, and fishing are the roots of this town. I remember that as a child, at lunchtime, from the always-open windows of our family homes overlooking the old alleys near the port, not a day went by without the aroma of a good fish dish greeting us as we returned from school or calling us back from playing on holidays. Finally, in adulthood, I managed to bring those memories back to life to offer them to those who, like me, love the authentic flavors of the sea. Our canned tuna, our specialties such as octopus and mullet, our sauces, and our bottarga are a tribute to a millennial history and a childhood memory that I enjoy reviving in Solky’s products.

Welcome to our website, welcome to Solky.

The island of Sant’Antioco

Solki is based on the island of Sant’Antioco, located in the southwestern part of Sardinia. The island, inhabited since prehistoric times, hosts traces of the Nuragic, Phoenician, Punic, and Roman civilizations. The town of the same name, founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC with the ancient name Sulky, was strategically positioned within the Mediterranean maritime trade routes and still today preserves a lively historic center. A tourist visit cannot miss the Ferruccio Barreca Archaeological Museum, the basilica dedicated to the martyr Antioco, the tophet, and the hypogeum village.

The coasts offer spectacular scenery, between volcanic cliffs and white sandy coves. The port and promenade are ideal for walks and tasting local cuisine, famous for its seafood dishes. The nearby town of Calasetta, founded by Ligurian settlers, adds charm with its Mediterranean style. Sant’Antioco is a perfect destination for those seeking nature, history, and tradition all in one place.

2800 years of tuna fishing

On the island of Sant’Antioco, tuna fishing has been a fundamental economic resource and an important part of the local culture for millennia, as evidenced by archaeological finds from the Phoenician era and historical documents confirming the presence of at least five tuna fisheries, including those of Cala Sapone, Punta Maggiore, and the island of La Vacca.

The Phoenicians carefully chose places like Sant’Antioco to set up tuna fisheries due to the proximity to migratory routes and favorable coastal formations, such as coves and shallow waters ideal for placing nets. Skilled navigators and traders, they introduced advanced fishing techniques for their time, including the use of fixed traps such as tuna fisheries (tonnare) designed for the seasonal capture of bluefin tuna. This type of fishing was not only a food resource but also a highly sought-after trade good, salted and stored in special amphorae to be exported to other Mediterranean ports.
